COMMON PEOPLE: Anny (Helena Třeštíkova, 2020)

2021-10-01/19:00 - 21:00

€3

The cycle of documentary film screenings COMMON PEOPLE initiated by Kaunas Artists’ House (KAH) and Kitas Kinas together with Vilnius documentary film festival invites you to the special screening of Helena’s Třeštíkova’s film Anny (2020). The screening will be held at Kaunas Artists’ House on the 1st of October, 7 PM.

Anny is a bright woman almost of retirement age. She started to work as a sex worker at the age of 46. She also works at a subway station where she collects money for the toilet service. In this film, Anny tells her life story from 1996 to 2012. The woman is depressed by the poor health of her grandson and daughter but in her daily life Anny is like everyone else. She goes to work, smiles at her customers, buys the most suitable clothes for job. She does not emphasize neither herself nor her profession. Occasionally, late at night, Anny dresses up and sings on stage. Together with her colleagues, the women run non-governmental organization uniting sex workers. Singing is one of the ways to express the very common need for safe work and peaceful life.

Documentary, Czech Republic, 2020, Czech with English and Lithuanian subtitles, 67 min.

The 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐎𝐍 𝐏𝐄𝐎𝐏𝐋𝐄 screening series aims to discuss not only the content of documentary films, but also the whole notion of documentary cinema. The series addresses questions of ethics, directorial decisions. To film or not to film? When does a director cross the line of closeness with their subject? Should documentary cinema reflect ‘reality’ or the vision of its creator? These questions and others are raised and discussed by looking at films who maintain a close look at people telling their own stories: sensitive, creative, eccentric and based somewhere in the margins.
The project is curated by Karolis Žukas (Kitas Kinas) and Edvinas Grinkevičius (Kaunas Artists’ House).
Visual identity: Eglė Simonavičiūtė.

The project is financed by the Lithuanian Film Center, organised by Kaunas Artists’ House. Partners: platform Kitas Kinas, Kaunas Culture Center, Kaunas Deaf Rehabilitation Centre.
Vilnius Documentary Film Festival (VDFF) is an international documentary film festival launched in 2004 in Lithuania, and is the main documentary film platform in the Baltics.
