It will be opened on 12 October, 3 pm. by a lecture on Farocki’s work by writer, film critic and Farocki’s colleague Michael Baute.

The programme shown at the Kaunas Artists’ House consists of three feature films and four thematic short films, covering his works from the first rebellious films of the 60s to the most recent works that analyse media, forms of war representation and consumer society.

Since the beginning of his creative career in the 1960s, Farocki created over 100 experimental and documentary films, video essays and video installations that are screened in cinemas as well as various art centres and galleries. Farocki worked as a text writer and editor at Filmkritik magazine during 1974-1984, taught at University of California, Berkeley and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, and was awarded a special jury prize at the Venice Biennale in 2015.

Farocki’s sociopolitically engaged work explores the influence of technology and the specifics of image production and construction in the modern world. His films feature themes that are rarely articulated in public discourse, such as genocide, the American prison system, war trauma, the Vietnam War, the working class situation, capitalism, surveillance technologies, etc. Film critic and researcher Thomas Elsaesser once said that Farocki’s films are a constant dialogue between images, the production of images and the institutions that create and use them.

In spite of the broad variety of the artist’s means of expression, the cinema medium is paramount: Farocki made precise use of cinematic language and materials (usually mounting films from pre-existing images) to create films reflecting on the medium itself, its syntax and grammar, strategies for representing reality, and ways of constructing the meaning of images.

Farocki’s films, which can also be categorised as belonging to the political video essay genre, invite viewers to think about different technologies and the power of visual media, how it manifests itself and how it can be used to manipulate the viewer’s consciousness. By analysing these topics Farocki’s films thus undoubtedly address important contemporary issues.
