People – the source of cultural initiative financing

2020-02-04/18:00 - 21:00

Free
On February 4th, 6 pm Kaunas Artists’ House is organizing a discussion “People – the source of cultural initiative financing: patronage and crowdfunding”.

It will feature cultural manager and art critic Rasa Antanavičiūtė and the head of LRT Klasika radio program Julijus Grickevičius. The discussion will be moderated by cultural manager Viktorija Mašanauskaitė-Rinkšelė.

Officially, both in the European Union and in Lithuania’s strategies, documents, and studies, culture is seen as the basis for building a cohesive society that promotes people’s self-awareness, however, it looks like its value is still not fully understood by the general public. This postulates a lack of people’s contribution to culture and its financial support. Responsibility is attributed to cultural organizations that generate cultural content, various initiatives, and the state.

What are the funding options for non-governmental cultural organizations or initiatives? What can they do themselves? How to encourage people to contribute to culture and art? Crowdfunding, looking for patrons, education, dissemination of culture and art – there are many tools but each case is extremely individual.

Viktorija Mašanauskaitė-Rinkšelė is the initiator, coordinator, and leader of various cultural projects. She graduated with a BA in culture management at Vilnius University and with an MA from Vilnius Academy of Arts. She has been actively working in the field of culture in Kaunas, mainly in the non-governmental sector. Currently, she is involved with projects such as Kaunas Art Book Fair, Magazine for Kaunas Į, presenting the Kaunas Photography Gallery publications abroad and others.

Cultural manager and

art critic, the developer and executive director of Vilnius Art Academy Nida Art Colony (2011-2019) and an interim director of the recently established Vilnius City Museum Dr. Rasa Antanavičiūtė was the commissioner and producer of the Lithuanian pavilion at the 58t Venice Contemporary Art Biennale. She was responsible for the successful implementation of the project both organizationally and financially. The budget of the opera-performance Sun and Sea (Marina) during the six-month biennial was constantly increasing and from the initial 173 thousand Euro finally reached 764 thousand, which were allocated to the pavilion by institutions and private persons in Lithuania and abroad.

Julijus Grickevičius is a public relations and marketing specialist. For the last fifteen years, he has worked consistently in the field of culture including

Kaunas Dance Theater Aura, Kaunas Symphony Orchestra, Kaunas Big Band. He was developing sponsorship projects when working as a head of the Public Information Division of the Lithuanian National Philharmonic. While he was a managing director and the head of marketing at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theater, Julijus Grickevičius had initiated a program of personal sponsorship, development, and implementation. He constantly cooperates with jazz festivals, heads the Lithuanian Jazz Federation, and had organized a topical jazz festival VDU Jazz Jungtys that survived for 6 years. Currently, Julijus is the head of the LRT Klasika radio program.

For the 22nd time this year, Kaunas Artists’ House is organizing competition the Most Memorable Artist of Kaunas City 2019 and for the 2nd year – Most Memorable Initiative of Kaunas and Kaunas

District 2019. They are traditionally accompanied by a series of open discussions aimed at debating relevant issues of the cultural field, challenges, and future prospects.
