On March 10, 6 pm Kaunas Artists’ House together with Lithuanian Writers’ Union invite to the meeting of InfoBooks event series, the presentation of Kim Leine’s novel The Prophets of Eternal Fjord (Translated to Lithuanian in 2019) together with the book’ s translator Ieva Toleikytė. The event will be moderated by Lina Buividavičiūtė.

Kim Leine’s biography is extremely varied. He was born in Norway, grew up in Jehovah’s Witness family, fled to his father in Denmark in his teens, lived in Greenland for 15 years, learned Greenlandic, even attempted to create a peculiar Greenlandic identity, worked as a village paramedic. He was addicted to drugs and wrote his first novel when he was 46. The Prophets of Eternal Fjord is the author’s fourth novel and the first installment in a trilogy about the intricate history of Denmark and Greenland. In 2013, the writer received the prestigious Nordic Council Award for it. “The Prophets of Eternal Fjord was inspired by true 18th century events during the reign of King Christian of Denmark and Norway VII. Characters walk on the bustling streets of Copenhagen, traverse the frozen barrens of Greenland, swim in the sea, hunt whales, become the witnesses to the great fire of Copenhagen in 1795. By vividly conveying the details of past life, the author creates a monumental epic about cross-cultural encounters, search for home and a great dream of freedom.”(15min.lt) Ieva Toleikytė is a Danish-Lithuanian translator and a writer (writes poetry and prose). “It is a monumental book. I have read if four times and I still experience giddiness when I think of its polyphonic structure and volume. It is an austere and honest book that dispels illusions. But the illusion of historical reality is so strong that if feels like you’re reading with all the five senses. Probably that’s why it gets etched in so deeply. When you “get back” from the book you can say, “I have also been there,” I. Toleikytė says about the book.

Lina Buividavičiūtė is a literary reviewer and author of the poetry book Helsinki Syndrome. She participates in the literary readings, performances, moderates book presentations, writes cultural critiques and reviews.

The event is presented by Kitos knygos.
