Infobooks: Virginija Cibarauskė „Kai aš buvai malalietka” book presentation

2019-09-16/18:00 - 19:00

On 16 September, 6 pm Kaunas Artists’ House presents the first revamped series of events called InfoBooks, co-curated with the Lithuanian Writers’ Union. “kai aš buvau malalietka” (2019, “kitos knygos” publishing house) book will be presented along with its author, writer Virginija Kulvinskaitė and essayist Paulina Drėgvaitė. The event will be held in Lithuanian, however you’re welcome to attend with your Lithuanian – English translator!

Author Virginija Kulvinskaitė (Cibarauskė) is poet, critic, writer, graduate of philology at Vilnius University, born in 1983 in Vilnius. This is her second book. The first one is a collection of poems “Antrininkė” published in free electronic form and limited edition of 30 units (Naujas vardas Publishing Company), the books are included in the Lithuanian Top 12 Books of the Year.

The novel “kai aš buvau malalietka” is firmly rooted within a specific time (1990s) and a specific place(Vilnius). Kiosks, raves, first night clubs in Vilnius, tours, later doctoral studies and international conferences. A philologist, a non-believer in literature, however holding an immediate appreciation for art above the world. The effort to fit in, the pursuit of love, the desire for pleasure, the moments of happiness, the dirt. And knowing that you won’t get beaten. It is an identity that does not fit into traditional images. No sentimentality. No sense of guilt. No overblown emotions.

“She (Virginija Cibarauskė) wrote this book in parallel with her thesis, so besides the seriousness and strict standards she allowed herself to write what she wanted and how she wanted it. Swear words, group sex, drugs, abortion – all came naturally to this. And not if it wasn’t really your part of the 1990s, it will still naturally blend in with other Vilnius realities.” – quote from “book i took” blog.

InfoBooks, a series of events organized by KMN Cultural Information Center and co-curated with the Lithuanian Writers’ Union, presenting the books of Lithuanian and foreign authors published in the last 3 years, representing the younger and older generations of writers.
