“Kitas Kinas”, the educational film platform, continues its series of documentary film screenings “Common People” at Kaunas Artists’ House, at the core of which lie portraits of eccentrics and hermits, tender relationships and everyday social occurences, subcultures and communities, living in the margins of society. On the 19th of June, 8.30 pm, the platform presents its first outdoor screening this year – “The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson” (dir. David France, 2017).

Victoria Cruz investigates the mysterious 1992 death of black gay rights activist and Stonewall veteran, Marsha P. Johnson, using archival interviews with Johnson, and new interviews with Johnson’s family, friends and fellow activists.

Dir. David France

The „Common People“ screening series aims to discuss not only the content of documentary films, but also the whole notion of documentary cinema. The series will adress questions of ethics, directorial decisions. To film or not to film? When does a director cross the line of closeness with their subject? Should documentary cinema reflect ‘reality’ or the vision of its creator? These questions and others will be raised and discussed looking at films who maintain a close look at people telling their own stories: sensitive, creative, eccentric and based somewhere in the margins.

June is well known as Pride month. Aiming to express their solidarity with LGBTQ+ communities Kaunas Artists’ House is hosting a series of events during June, dedicated to the history of LGBTQ+ activism and experiences. Beside the aforementioned event, KAH hosted “Queer poetics: autobiography as self-(de)construction”, a conversation/no-workshop with Gina Dau on the 4th of June.

This event is co-presented with Kreivės / Vilnius Queer Festival.
