On the last weekend of spring, one of the most exquisite streets of Kaunas will host “Putvinskio street day 2019”, a community street festival that has become a cherished tradition.
The festival, held on the 25th of May, 2019, invites to learn and create colourful stories of this street for the third time. Every year the festival programme fills V. Putvinskio street with cultural and educational activities, exciting community initiatives and newly-acquainted neighbours, whereas city dwellers and guests are invited to undiscovered courtyards, terraces, stairwells and exceptional interiors.
Last year’s festival emphasised the notion of collaboration and ecology. This year we turn our gaze towards language, which is inextricably linked to collaboration, and we propose to rethink its expressions in our neighbourhood(s). With the aid of language we communicate with the outside world, define our identity, express our history and culture, moreover, we preserve and create memory.
V. Putvinskio street is full of its secretive manifestations: our neighbourhood used to be the site of a flourishing vinyeard and the first Kaunas City Museum. Diplomats and vibrant multicultural communities used to walk beside the ever-rising Modernist buildings. Nowadays the story is continued by a growing number of cultural institutions, street art, reflecting a new era of the street can be found in its numerous courtyards, conversations on architecture still resonate loudly and multicultural communal connections are still being made. The inhabitants of local flats carry even more individual stories. Let’s open our windows, doors, balconies and courtyards: let’s meet on the 25th of May for a neighbourly bustle!
