Mocuments | November
2022-11-02/19:00 - 21:00
In November, we continue the cycle of video art and documentaries screenings—”Mocuments”. One of the screenings will be complemented by guided tours in the museum, and the other by discussing historical monuments or objects of memory politics in our public spaces.
2nd of November 7 p.m. at Kaunas Artists’ House Concert hall, V. Putvinskio st. 56-1.
The Meeting | 2012 | Kristina Inčiūraitė | Lithuania, Russia, Ireland | 26 min. | Russian with Lithuanian subtitles.
The film takes the viewer to the Kaliningrad region, and presents the artist’s correspondence with a female resident of the same age from the town of Svetlogorsk, who is seeking new acquaintances on the Internet. The author uses a male name (and her husband’s identity mixed up with her own), and does not disclose to her correspondent that this is part of an art project.
The Head | 2007 | Deimantas Narkevičius | Lithuania, Germany | 12 min | Russian and German with English subtitles.
The film The Head is edited out of existing footage and photo material from the 60’s and 70’s featuring the process of creation of the largest head (portrait) monument on the continent modelled by sculptor Lev Yefimovitch Kerbel. This monument to Karl Marx was erected in Karl-Marx-Stadt (now Chemnitz) in 1971. All the used materials for this film were produced by official GDR Television for the purpose of information and propaganda. It documents a unique process in its scope and intentions which could be understood as anachronistic, or sharply contradicting with current aesthetics of public spaces in most European cities.
Tear Down and Rebuild | 2015 | Jasmina Cibic | Slovenia | 15 min | English with English subtitles.
Composed exclusively of quotes drawn from political speeches, debates and proclamations that extract and emphasize the iconoclasm of architecture, art and monuments – Tear Down and Rebuild creates an original conversation between four characters. A Nation Builder, a Pragmatist, a Conservationist and an Artist/Architect become a reflection of ideological deliberation facing a practical scruple.
The screening will be followed by a discussion on the politics of collective memory at play in public spaces with sociologist Karolis Dambrauskas, artists Agne Gintalaite and Egle Grėbliauskaitė. Discussion in Lithuanian.
Screening and discussion series funded by the Lithuanian Film Centre
