Obscene West. In Honey

2021-11-10/19:00 - 21:00

This autumn, Kaunas Artists’ House invites you to look back on the 1990s – a period of social, political, and cultural changes in Lithuania and the world – and presents the project and the cycle of events “Obscene West. In Honey”, dedicated to the women artists who created at that time. The project, named after the performance-video installation by Eglė Rakauskaitė in 1996, of the same name will analyze the issues of gender roles and sexuality in this changing decade, as well as the manifestations of feminism movements in art in Lithuania and neighboring post-Soviet countries.

The cycle of events, which will take place in November-December, will begin with a reading session moderated by Eglė Kačkutė-Hagan, associate professor, literary critic, researcher, and publicist of the Department of French Philology at Vilnius University, with one of the key texts in the history of Lithuanian feminism, compiled by Karla Gruodis. Readings of the anthology texts will take place on November 10th, 7 p.m. at Kaunas Artists’ House.

The project is funded by Lithuanian Council for Culture.

The project is curated by Agnė Bagdžiūnaitė and Edvinas Grinkevičius
