Mocuments // Los Angeles Plays Itself
2021-09-16/19:00 - 22:00
Kaunas Artists’ House opens its doors again by inviting you to the programme of the film screenings “Mocuments”. This video art and film distribution project analyzes the different realities and the construction of those subjective realities. In this way, Lithuanian curators, researchers, and future young creators are encouraged to take a closer look at both the existing archives and the video art created in Eastern Europe and Lithuania.
This year’s “Mocuments” program consists of two cycles.
The first cycle – “Anonymous as Political” – is designed to reflect intensively on one of the methods of narrative construction, when images or narratives are “sounded” and edited in such a way that they acquire a completely different meaning, revealing other focal points.
This cycle will open on September 16th at 7 p.m. when Vytautas Magnus University Professor J. D. Mininger will present Thomas Andersen’s film-essay “Los Angeles Plays Itself” (2004). The patient historian and feverish cinephile Thomas Andersen has few films in his entire career as a film director. But all of his films, like “Los Angeles Plays Itself,” are stories based on an impressive amount of research into the film industry. This is an extraordinary documentary unmatched by any other documentary ever made.
“Los Angeles Plays Itself” is a decisively but subtly arranged politically engaged film. It’s a composition of dense mosaic scenes, shots and clippings from Hollywood movies. In his film-essay, the director seeks to reveal a different, Hollywood-stifled, history of the city of Los Angeles. The director invites viewers to take a look through the cinematic history of the metropolis, revealing the true face of the city. What is it like?
Movie screening is FREE, but the possibility pass is required and registration in advance: https://cutt.ly/hW0uecG

The “Mocuments” project is part of the extended program “Unlearning Eastern Europe”. This project aims to rethink the problems specific to the Eastern European region, from the traumas of the historical past, the possibilities of decolonization to the strategies of memory politics or activism.
