Workshop: Sound in space
2021-09-18/11:00 - 15:00
Matters Platform for Industrial Culture is once again inviting you to a sound workshop. This time, three artists from three Baltic countries will visit Kaunas Artists’ House: Martins Rokis (Baltic Immersive Audio Network; Latvia), Roberto Becerra (Ideas Block; Lithuania) and Theodore Parker (Estonian Electronic Music Society; Estonia).
Martins Rokis (LV) is an interdisciplinary artist from Riga whose interests combine digital technology, sound design and audiovisual media research. It will give a brief overview of what is meant by the term “immersive sound” and what are ambisonic, binaural and other formats. Martins will discuss the practical benefits that new sound technologies can offer artists and musicians and what are the goals of Baltic Immersive Audio Network.
Theodore Parker (EE) will focus on the idea of space and its application to music as a parameter: “In multichannel diffusion, the concept of space arises as the main parameter of musical experience which is enhanced by such applications as Ambisonics. However, what are the concepts surrounding this issue of space? Is it really a perfectly clear term which we all understand intuitively?” The lecture will discuss what space is and what this term means in the fields of acoustic ecology and phenomenology.
Theodore is electro acoustic musician, who focuses on space and site specificity. He’s one of the five members of estonian live electronic ensemble EMA and teaches at the Estonian Academy of Music.
Roberto Becerra (LT) is an engineer, technologist, sound maker and multidisciplinary creator, founder of the Ideas Block creative space in Vilnius, as well as an assistant lecturer and developer at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater. During the lecture, he is inviting to think sound-in-space and space-in-sound, and talk about sound in space not only as a stereo format, but also as a tool of sound artwork.
These creative workshops are for creators from various fields, interested in the possibilities of sound in/and space. Experience in sound recording, sound design, editing, sound installation, performance and composition can be useful but is not required.
The workshop will take place on September 18th at Kaunas Artists’ House. Participation in the workshop is free, signing up is mandatory: matters@kpk.lt (please indicate your full name and telephone number). Only participants with the green pass will be admitted to the workshops.
The number of participants in the workshop is limited, the workshop will be held in English.
The initiator of this joint workshop project is BIAN, Baltic Immersive Audio Network. The aim of the BIAN network, established this year, is to bring together immersive sound producers and sound engineers in the Baltic region in order to share knowledge, experience and collaborate. BIAN initiates and organizes workshops and develops an open database and tools that will facilitate the exchange in the field and provide access to knowledge for those who otherwise lack access to it.
The workshop is presented by Matters. Platform for Industrial Culture in cooperation with Baltic Immersive Audio Network, Kaunas Artists’ House and Kaunas European Capital of Culture 2022. BIAN is kindly supported by Nordic Culture Point.
