The works of artists Niamh Seana Meehan (Northern Ireland) and Gintė Regina (Lithuania) exhibited in the exhibition “Waiting for Direction” have already been shown at the Center for Contemporary Art in Derry ~ Londonderry in Northern Ireland. The artists were the first participants in the reciprocal residency programme DeMo (Decoding Modernity). Back in February 2020, both artists resided in partnering organisations: Niamh Seana Meehan worked at the Kaunas Artists’ House, and Gintė Regina worked at the Center for Contemporary Art Derry ~ Londonderry. There, in the same year, they showed two solo exhibitions at the same time, on the basis of which the exhibition “Waiting for Direction” has been organised in Kaunas. The exhibition will run until September 29.
Today, we get a lot of instructions on how to behave, where we can go, how to communicate. On the one hand, the knowledge of instructions on how to proceed at least for a short time can give the illusion of minimal security. On the other hand, precariousness broadly understood as existential and material insecurity, instability or vulnerability has not disappeared but intensified. The exhibition “Waiting for Direction” talks about melancholic waiting focusing on existential linguistic and emotional insecurity.
The work of artist Niamh Seana Meehan from Northern Ireland seeks to highlight the barriers created by language in public and private institutions. Another artist, Gintė Regina, in the exhibition seeks to analyze the momentary sense of closeness in a foreign country. Her film and text heroes roam the world trying to discover a sense of security.
The exhibition working hours from Tuesday to Friday 12 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Center for Contemporary Art Derry~Londonderry is the main partner of the reciprocal residency programme’s “DeMo” part.
