DeMo rezidencies: Voluntary Exile
2021-06-30/14:00 - 17:00
On the 30th of June, Kaunas Artists’ House cordially invites you to join current “DeMo” resident Marija Krstic (Serbia) in her performance series, which will take place at Vilijampolė Market in Kaunas. The performances will conclude the artist’s 3-week residency here at KAH.
Marija Krstic: “The Voluntary Exile project explores the tendency of young adults in Serbia to move from big cities to rural environments in order to provide better living conditions for themselves and their families. Under the conditions of the recent pandemic, with lockdowns and social life reduced to a minimum, big cities have become the source of infections, pollution, misinformation, chaos, and stress. Suddenly villages, small towns, and natural habitats have become highly desirable and in demand. It has become very popular to go into the VOLUNTARY EXILE.”
The performance Voluntary Exile, created during the residency DEMO, will present the dilemma between the two opposing concepts of modern life – urban and rural – using contemporary circus skills as theatrical tools. It is a unique opportunity to collaborate with young and perspective Lithuanian circus artists – Aino Maekipaeae and Marija Baranauskaitė.
According to the artist, the local market is the meeting place between the urban and rural way of life. As such, it is a great place to explore the concept of EXISTENZMINIMUM. It also has a fairground atmosphere that complements the circus arts. The urban part of the performance takes place in an indoor space. While the act representing the rural context will take place outside.
Kaunas Artists’ House, in cooperation with the Cultural Center LAB in Novi Sad (Serbia), Novi Sad – European Capital of Culture 2022, is implementing the artists’ reciprocal residency programme DeMo (Decoding Modernity) on the theme of EXISTENZMINIMUM.
Event friends and sponsors – “Vilijampolės turgus” and the Contemporary Circus Center “Cirko Sapiens”.
Reciprocal Residency DeMo is a part of “Kaunas – European Capital of Culture 2022” programme.
